This enchanting piece of magic, traditionally known as Karakuri Byobu or Obi Karakuri in Japan, is a paper-based mechanism that creates astonishing visual effects through a series of simple folds and reveals. Though seemingly a flat sheet, it transforms in ways that defy logic, making pictures appear or change.
:
The spectator selects two cards. Unknown to the magician, these selections are the Eight of Hearts and the Queen of Hearts.
The magician introduces a curious piece of paper patterned with red and white squares and filled with heart-shaped cutouts. Both sides are shown clearly before he proclaims, "This will help me reveal your cards."
He folds the paper and reveals two hearts, asking the first spectator: "Is that your card? The Two of Hearts?" “No,” comes the reply.
The magician folds the paper again—this time revealing four hearts. "The Four of Hearts, then?" Again, the spectator denies it.
Smiling, the magician asks: "Alright, give me one last chance. What was your card?" "The Eight of Hearts," the spectator replies.
With a quick snap, the paper is unfolded, revealing the Eight of Hearts boldly displayed. Before the surprise settles in, the magician gives another snap, and the card instantly vanishes from the paper.
He turns to the second spectator. "And what was your card? "The Queen of Hearts."
The paper is folded again, and the Queen of Hearts appears. Another snap, and the card vanishes
