In ancient times, people believed that every object had a spirit of its own. The Spirit Deck brings that idea to a deck of cards: an impossible fusion of card magic, light, and optical engineering.
Turning a deck into a solid object, whether crystal, wood, or another material, is a classic finale in card magic. The familiar cards become something unexpected. Birdy Cai and Jay Wang take the effect further: the deck becomes a transparent block, and light reveals the card that remains.
The Effect
Two participants each select a card. Both cards are returned to the deck and mixed. You perform your favorite card routine and reveal the first selection.
As attention turns to the second card, the audience discovers that the entire deck has become a transparent block. You describe what remains as the “spirit” of the deck: a memory of the cards it once held.
Shine a mobile phone flashlight through the block, and a clear image of the second participant’s chosen card is projected for the audience to see.
The image is neither printed on the surface nor hidden inside the block. It forms entirely through the interaction between light and the block’s internal optical structure.

A Different Approach to Card Revelations
The block appears clear and smooth. Within it, microscopic features created through advanced manufacturing techniques control and redirect light. Illuminate it from the correct angle, and those features form the image of a playing card.
An ordinary beam of light becomes a card revelation. The light seems to carry the memory of a participant’s thought.

Flexible Performance Possibilities
Designed as a finale, the Spirit Deck fits into a wide variety of existing card routines. You can use it as:
- The finale to a signed card routine
- A revelation of a selected card
- A prediction hidden in plain sight
- A mysterious “soul of the deck” presentation

Present it as a scientific curiosity, a mysterious artifact, or the final transformation in a card routine. Pair it with sleight of hand, gimmicked methods, or routines of your own to create a conclusion that feels impossible.
Its precision optical construction projects a playing card image using a mobile phone flashlight or a similar light source. It suits close-up, parlor, and social performances.

Measurements
- Spirit Deck: 88 × 63 × 15 mm. Thickness may vary by ±1 mm.
About the Finish of the Spirit Deck
The manufacturing process leaves the edges less than perfectly polished. Slight variations, small blemishes, and subtle differences between blocks are normal, even within the same production batch. They do not affect the optical projection or the performance of the effect.
Some performers prefer edges that resemble the sides of a real deck of cards. Others prefer the appearance of a transparent crystal block. You can choose the finish that suits your presentation.
Each Spirit Deck includes a small piece of sandpaper. The tutorial explains how to lightly sand the edges to create a matte finish that more closely resembles the sides of a deck of playing cards.
If you prefer the appearance of a transparent crystal block, leave it as it is. No sanding is needed.
